I knew some of their members when I made my film in Sing Sing prison in 1972. Terrific people. Very talented. This poet describes how his immigrant people felt when they got to America – to New York City, and found out what the real world outside of Puerto Rico was like.

We were passing through town and got invited. At the time, most Americans weren't thinking about the kids of the soldiers who came home. They were a part of a group that mostly talked to one another. I wish I had filmed more of this dialogue than I did.

People were becoming aware of just how bad the air was polluted and no one had any real idea what to do about it at that time.

Young people were being taught how to use 16mm equipment and “make movies” in major cities across the country. I thought such a class of amateurs in New York and at Sing Sing prison in Westchester County. Whether made with actors or made as a documentary, these films had and have a certain authenticity to them. I don't know what happened to most of the amateur filmmakers but I hope that many became successful.

Student radicals were represented as were professors and administrators and some people from the “community.” At one point, this professor steps up with the most unusual statement. Political correctness has largely caused the removal of Malcolm saying these kinds of things. Some called it Black racism. He is expressing the words of his leader, Elijah Mohammed.

I really liked the way the script writer wrote the script and the way the narrator read it. Trying to deal with a time that upset many Christians who were trying to understand the nature of the rebellion.

This was an amazing public television effort to connect police departments in cities like Detroit, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta with black leaders and spokespeople in a live communication. The technology was new. There had been riots in each of the cities over police brutality. I kept this in my archive because of the frankness between the “sides.” Political correctness has made this kind of conversation impossible in any public media.
