I knew some of their members when I made my film in Sing Sing prison in 1972. Terrific people. Very talented. This poet describes how his immigrant people felt when they got to America – to New York City, and found out what the real world outside of Puerto Rico was like.

When I was a kid this age in school In Levittown Long Island in the early 1950s, we had drills like this but never put on gas masks. I knew some of them when I made my documentary film at Sing Sing prison. They were articulate and smart and passionate. I don't know what happened to most of these folks I met, including this woman.

We were passing through town and got invited. At the time, most Americans weren't thinking about the kids of the soldiers who came home. They were a part of a group that mostly talked to one another. I wish I had filmed more of this dialogue than I did.

Young people were being taught how to use 16mm equipment and “make movies” in major cities across the country. I thought such a class of amateurs in New York and at Sing Sing prison in Westchester County. Whether made with actors or made as a documentary, these films had and have a certain authenticity to them. I don't know what happened to most of the amateur filmmakers but I hope that many became successful.

Political correctness has largely caused the removal of Malcolm saying these kinds of things. Some called it Black racism. He is expressing the words of his leader, Elijah Mohammed.

I really liked the way the script writer wrote the script and the way the narrator read it. Trying to deal with a time that upset many Christians who were trying to understand the nature of the rebellion.

This was an amazing public television effort to connect police departments in cities like Detroit, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta with black leaders and spokespeople in a live communication. The technology was new. There had been riots in each of the cities over police brutality. I kept this in my archive because of the frankness between the “sides.” Political correctness has made this kind of conversation impossible in any public media.

The term was coined by Los Angeles radio comedian Peter Bergman, who also hosted the first one in March or April 1967 (sources disagree) in Elysian Park.[1][2] It has been interpreted in different ways by different organizations, but is often connected to protesting local, social or environmental issues.[3][4] Such protests were held in opposition to the Vietnam War.[5]

Of course this clip, a film collected from my archives of material gleaned from The National Archives who I worked with in the 1970s, was serious at the time. And it's message really isn't a bad one. But educational films like this one largely shown in schools did not have the effect intended as most every student, even back then, laughed at the way they were made.
