Of course this clip, a film collected from my archives of material gleaned from The National Archives who I worked with in the 1970s, was serious at the time. And it's message really isn't a bad one. But educational films like this one largely shown in schools did not have the effect intended as most every student, even back then, laughed at the way they were made.

The speaker is George Leonard. I interviewed him and hundreds of others as part of my 6 part PBS television series, Making Sense Of The Sixties. He's trying to find an explanation for why so many parents of the 1950s, especially in the rising middle class, spoiled their kids without really realizing that they were doing that and what the effective that might be.
