When I was a kid this age in school In Levittown Long Island in the early 1950s, we had drills like this but never put on gas masks. As many of my subscribers know, I made a feature-length documentary titled Sputnik Mania as a one-hour education special titled The Sputnik Moment (visible on my channel). I spent years collecting the material and I especially like this local news report which took place within 24 hours of that moment when the 1st Earth satellite appeared above us. My family was in awe. We stood outside and looked up. The experience of seeing that 1st man-made thing in space have a profound effect on me, on America, and on the world.

We were passing through town and got invited. At the time, most Americans weren't thinking about the kids of the soldiers who came home. They were a part of a group that mostly talked to one another. I wish I had filmed more of this dialogue than I did.

I copied his programs by arrangement with the national archives, 40 years ago. This hippie get-together is just wild. It looked crazy and a bit frightening at the time. It still looks that way to me. And anything with Abbie Hoffman to me is wonderful to watch. Like a political clown with a pretty serious point behind all the clowning.

They were outrageous in part because he tried to get to the bottom of stories in very creative ways–and very unusual ways for TV at that time (or even now). I admired him as a creative person though I never worked directly with him.

We went through an amazing research process to find people like this guy.
